Useless History Trivia: WWF Abraham Lincoln Edition

You all know me pretty well, right? You know how my mind works? Sure you do. But let's test that.

First, watch this Diet Mountain Dew commercial.

Question: What historical inaccuracy did I immediately point out to Emily (note: Emily isn't eligible to answer)?

Answer will be posted Sunday.

  1. My first guess is that Lincoln's voice is off, but it's probably something more esoteric, like that the debates weren't held outdoors (they may have been. I have no idea).

  2. I can't tell if the voice is off or not. Lincoln, by accounts of those who heard him speak, had a high-pitched voice with a fairly thick Midwestern accent. The actor doesn't talk all that much, so I can't tell.

And the debates were held outdoors. I had to look it up too: I couldn't remember if they were, or how many there were (there were seven debates).

Remember, there is more than one historical inaccuracy here. I want to see if you can identify the one that I immediately picked up on after watching it.

  3. Lincoln didn't have a beard at the time depicted on the commerical?

  4. Patrick beat me to it.

Lincoln was clean-shaven during the debates (see here).

He grew the beard after it was suggested by a little girl named Grace Bedell. That story is here. That was in late 1860.

I don't know if it was the first historical inaccuracy that you pointed out, but it was sure the first one that jumped out at me.
